A number of things can cause redness on face such as an embarrassing situation or spicy food. There are also certain conditions that can contribute to facial redness. Here are a few of them:
Alcohol Flushing
Alcohol flushing immediately happens after consuming alcoholic beverages due to the decreased activity of the alcohol dehydrogenase enzymes.. This type of redness is not usually alarming as it is only temporary. Asians are more prone to alcohol flushing.
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
SLE or Lupus is an autoimmune condition that affects different organs and tissues of the body such as the skin, joints, blood, heart, kidney, lungs and brain. This disease manifest facial redness called “butterfly rash” across the person’s cheeks and nose. Added to that, Lupus can also cause skin rashes to other parts of the body and may even get worse to sun exposure.
Rosacea
This condition may start to resemble like facial flushing or may look like sunburn. But gradually it develops and may even worsen involving the cheeks, nose and forehead. Symptoms may vary from day to day. Small papules and pustules may also appear which can burst and ooze causing pain and itchiness. As Rosacea progresses, capillaries in the face may widen (telangiectasias) permanently. However, telangiectasias may be treated with intense pulsed light.
German Measles
German measles (Rubella) is caused by the rubella virus and one of its main symptoms is the facial redness. Overtime, the rash will spread to other parts of the body such as the trunk, arms and legs. Complications of German measles include congenital heart defect, ear infections or cataracts.
Cushing’s Syndrome
Cushing’s syndrome is a hormone disorder that is caused by the exposure of the body to too much cortisol (a stress hormone). Cushing’s syndrome is relatively rare, and in addition to redness of the face, includes the following symptoms: high blood pressure, high blood glucose levels, fatigue, irritability, depression and anxiety. Women with Cushing’s syndrome often show signs of increased hair growth on the face, neck, abdomen, chest and thighs.
