I went online the other day to buy a bed canopy for my little girls room. I was really impressed with the choice out there. There are some great companies producing some really pretty things. I wasn’t expecting to find much as I thought the whole things was maybe a little old fashioned. What’s really great about the internet is the chance to find lots of small independent suppliers who you might otherwise never find.
The big department stores tend to just stock the big name brands and I don’t always want the mass manufactured stuff. Worse still they fill their shelves with cheap products imported from China and the like. That may work for some household items but when you’re trying to find something a little unique with a bit of character then it’s completely hopeless.
I hadn’t seen a kids canopy bed for ages. I remember my first canopy bed. It wasn’t a ready made four poster bed, they didn’t really make those for kids back in my day. Instead my mother found some really pretty material, I don’t remember her buying it but she always seemed to have a great selection of fabrics. She simply stitched the edges and suspended it from the ceiling in four places. Oh it was so romantic and that’s why I want to find one for my daughter.
I should try to make one myself but I’m completely hopeless with anything manual. I can barely thread a needle let alone work out how to use a sewing machine. Anyway in the end I was saved when I found a wonderful arts and crafts website where lots of really talented craftsmen and woman were selling their wares. I found one woman who lives in Florida who had created a whole range of bespoke pretty bed canopies and at a really reasonable price too. I was only too happy to pay for such a unique and elegant piece and I’m sure my daughter is going to be delighted.
