The US is undoubtedly one of the most frequently visited countries in the world. Every year, hundreds of thousands of tourists, workers and immigrants plan a trip to the States hoping to experience the spirit of America and the American Dream. What those visitors often tend to forget is that the access to the medical or health care services in States can be far more difficult than what they have been accustomed to. First of all, if someone has taken advantage of the available health care services in their native country and bought domestic health insurance, visitors aren’t necessarily entitled to all the health care services in the US.
In fact, the US laws don’t accept insurance coverage provided by overseas insurance groups. Americans don’t pay for the health care services separately; instead they must buy medical insurance that covers the expenses of any service that they get. Insurance coverage is typically government-sponsored or self-sponsored but foreign visitors can never get the access to the former, without citizenship. What the visitor can do, however, is buy visitor medical insurance that works as a self-sponsored insurance and is honored while in the US. It’s important though to purchase this policy from an authenticated US-based provider to make sure it’s going to be valid.
The visitor medical plans are further divided into fixed benefit plans and comprehensive benefit plans. Fixed benefit plans include a detailed list of health care services that travel insurance may not cover. The comprehensive benefit plans, as the name indicates, have a more holistic approach to health care services and they also include covering expenses concerning problems related with travelling, i.e. when the luggage is missing or if a flight was cancelled. For obvious reasons, comprehensive benefit plans are the most recommended for all foreigners who plan to come to the US and stay for some time.
