The booming growth of mini notebook computers

More Americans are either using or are hearing more and more about mini notebook computers. These small laptop computers, also called netbooks, are growing in popularity for their affordability, usability, light weight and small size. Though small laptop computers have been around for years, the introduction of strong wireless technology and networks has expanded their usage in the marketplace.

In the computing world, minis are considered part of the “subnotebooks” realm, a category reserved for the very light, small and not expensive laptop computers built and sold for basic needs and using the Internet. These tools are rarely tapped by consumers as a primary computer; most often they are considered a “companion,” accessory or even recreational device.

They can weigh as little as 2 pounds with a 10-inch screen diagonally, and essentially are about three-quarters the physical size of a typical laptop computer. This makes them wonderful for portability, to maneuver around and take to coffee shops or for travel. Wireless telephone companies are taking advantage by offering service contract deals with some netbooks for consumers interested in accessing wireless Internet services anywhere.

There can be drawbacks. For example, most typical small laptops today come with a DVD player and/or a Microsoft suite of programs such as Word. This is not so with every netbook. Buyers should pay attention to products they are considering. Again, many netbooks are aimed purely at Internet browsing and not so much for typical computing such as word processing or printing documents. Check them out at a mini notebook computers store.

There is no doubt that laptop notebooks are becoming more popular with Americans. The reasons are varied, but in today’s economy, affordability is a key aspect. Additionally, the small size and portability makes the mini attractive to children and young adults. One study in fall 2009 stated netbooks accounted for 20 percent of shipments of all portable computers.
