Is a storage bag the best way to store your Mazda hardtop?

The Mazda MX5 is a great little sports car that is owned by millions of people around the world. Although in its third incarnation a roadster version was created – where the fold down soft top roof was replaced by a mechanical hardtop version – there are still many of the mark 1 and 2 versions on the road which have the clip on hardtop roof. This hardtop roof provides some extra headroom in the winter and some extra warmth and reduces the drive noise significantly. It is a great addition to the car but the one downside is how and where to store it. There are many storage options available from freestanding stands to bags that you put them in. I happen to think that the bag is the best way to store your hardtop for the following reasons:

The hardtop storage bag provides an additional padded skin around your roof so that if anything grazes or touches the roof it cannot damage paint work. If you get the right type of storage back it also has hooks to mount the bad on the wall. Mounting the roof of the wall is of great use space as it takes up no floor space whatsoever so you can still put stuff underneath it. If you’ve got a garage or a shared then this is the ideal way you to store your roof – with it hung on the wall it would be next to impossible to knock off and so it will be kept safe from damage throughout the summer months.

The freestanding stand that you can get for the Mazda MX5 hardtop roof is just as it sounds – it is in essence a glorified tripod that roof rests against. This freestanding stand offers no protection from things brushing or grating against it and hence the paintwork can become easily damaged. You also only need in over boisterous dog will child to slam into the roof and it’ll be carnage your roof will be easily toppled stand and will probably require re-spray – this is not a cheap task.

From the previous two points you can probably see why I think that storage bag is in fact the best way to store your roof when it is not on your car.
